Generational Wealth

Generational Wealth Is a Horizon Problem

August 2026 · 5 min read

Wealth that survives one market cycle is a trade. Wealth that survives three is an institution. The difference is decided by horizon, not by yield.

A single cycle rewards timing. A generation rewards structure. The assets that transfer intact are almost never the ones with the highest peak return — they are the ones with the clearest title, the most conservative leverage, and the least dependence on any one operator.

Horizon changes the questions. Instead of asking what an asset returns this year, we ask who will hold it, who maintains it, and what it is worth to the next custodian. Those answers are decided long before the asset is built.

For families and family offices, the practical implication is uncomfortable: the portfolio that protects a generation is usually less exciting than the one that flatters a quarter. We structure for the former.
